The rules
1. Il LANTERNINO is a virtual meeting place for authors, translators, publishers and revisers. It aims to promote translation quality and proper recognition of the professional skills of all those involved in the publishing process.

2. Il LANTERNINO selects and publishes profiles of foreign works which have yet to be published in Italian, together with proposals to translate or re-translate foreign works.

3. Il LANTERNINO is a not-for-profit project and does not act as a broker. Its purpose is to promote direct communication between interested parties by publishing book profiles and translation proposals.

a. Il Lanternino does not levy any charges for its services; it is supported by donations and relies on volunteer contributors to function.
b. Il Lanternino promotes direct contact between authors, publishers, translators and professional editors, but plays no part in the working relationships that may develop. A restricted-access database is provided, containing the revisers’ CVs and listing their specializations.
c. Il Lanternino aims to counter underground brokering practices in the publishing world. Such activities are at best parasitic and at worst fraudulent. To this end, it welcomes suggestions and contributions from translators, publishers, professional organizations and guilds, and editorial and literary agencies.
4. Il LANTERNINO avails itself of the unpaid services of Mentors (mentori) and Sparks (stoppini)
a. Mentors are translators, teachers, writers and other professionals. They evaluate book profiles and translation proposals independently and give their opinion. The Mentors’ approval is required for profiles and translation proposals to be published. Details of the mentors’ specializations are kept in a restricted-access database.
b. Sparks are volunteers who offer their services to the promoters of Il Lanternino by performing particular tasks and generally helping with the day-to-day running of the project.
5. Il LANTERNINO operates through a website, www.lanternino.net, and a newsletter. Book profiles are published in the newsletter. Profiles, translation or re-translation proposals are available on the site on a permanent basis and published as soon as possible in order of arrival, subject to the Mentors’ opinion. The newsletter is published and e-mailed to subscribers as and when there are sufficient proposals to justify this.
a. Translation proposals may concern texts which have already been translated, in part or in full, as well as texts which have already been revised and are ready for printing.
b. The proposer shall report back on the outcome of their proposal. Once the book is published, the original proposal is stored in a long-term archive linked to the site, together with bibliographical references and the translator’s comments, if any.
c. The newsletter is sent to Il Lanternino’s subscribers and to translators’ lists, with their consent.
6. Il LANTERNINO may accept or reject any proposal received; the promoters’ decision shall be final, once they have consulted at least two Mentors.

7. Il LANTERNINO welcomes requests for book profiles to be compiled, or translations to be carried out, from any language into any language, and publishes them in the newsletter.

8. Il LANTERNINO welcomes suggestions and relevant comments from foreign holders of publishing rights for titles whose translation may conceivably find favour with the Italian public. Following publication of the suggestion, any translator may take out an option to produce a book profile. Options shall lapse two calendar months after publication of the suggestion. Failure to honour an option shall exclude the translator from taking out options on future proposals.

9. Il LANTERNINO promotes small-scale publishing in co-operation with publishing house Lampi di Stampa (www.lampidistampa.it) and does not charge for its services.

a. The volumes thus published will bear a logo with the words “Un Libro del Lanternino” in the half-title page; they will have a standard ISBN code, be included in a separate section of the Lampi di Stampa catalogue and be available in bookshops and on Internet Bookshop Italia.
b. All publication and distribution expenses shall be the responsibility of the author, the translator or a sponsor who is willing to assume the financial burden of publication.
c. The author, translator and sponsor (where applicable), shall be legally responsible for all titles published by Lampi di Stampa.
